Unlike most of the Cities, Kings Street, the main road through Yaleth is something of a rollercoaster, lurching downwards to the Brail and the Reckstag Bridge, then sharply up again to Ansell Square.  The two rises are known as Pretbell's Hill to the west and Royal Hill to the east, the latter slightly higher, both rising just to the north of the Reckstag and frowning at each other across the river.  The Courts of Justice lie on the top of Royal Hill, naturally enough for an ex-palace; St. Michan Street runs along its western crest, giving the rich lawyers and Lewis Avenue refugees who inhabit its lovely houses the dubious pleasure of views over the Brail and western Yaleth.  The huge Garrath church lies on the northern edge of Royal Hill, New Reystone Prison along the southern one.  Pretbell's hill is a lot narrower and steeper, with houses perched rather precariously on its side (rather fewer than before the Great Collapse, as it was the main area of Yaleth to be hit).  Witherwan Square and Jolton Square both nestle on mini-plateaux; Sweetings Road climbs round and up Pretbell's Hill until it comes to Corgale's Gardens, a small public park on the flat top of the hill, with cliffs running straight down to the Brail.  Corgale was a character from pre-Erish Empire days who allegedly escaped his enemies by leaping from Pretbell's Hill straight across to land running on Royal Hill (a lot of Cities folk heroes have earned their fame by running away from someone or the other).  More common these days is people leaping off intending to go straight down into the river; Corgale's Gardens are a popular suicide spot.
